Mercy Ministry

A unique feature of Chicago’s Northside is the number of neighborhoods that are considered the most ethnically diverse communities in the world. A big reason for this diversity is that a number of refugee resettlement agencies are located in neighborhoods such as Uptown and Albany Park. As a congregation, we prayed and explored how could we help with the refugee population living alongside us, which led to partnering with RefugeeOne and Mather High School.

RefugeeOne

We partner with RefugeeOne and United Methodist Church of New Lennox to co-sponsor a family that arrived under refugee status in June 2016.  This has entailed providing a welcome meal, helping the family navigate through medical and academic needs, researching resources close to where the family lives, beginning to learn about the family’s culture and language, playing games, going on walks, and socializing over shared meals. As we have gotten to know this family, they are sharing their needs and hopes. Check out this link to learn more from RefugeeOne as to what a blessing it is to co-sponsor a family.

Mather High School

At Mather High School, located in the West Ridge neighborhood, more than 75% of the students speak another language at home and can have around thirty new refugee students enrolling in their school every year. We are providing school supplies for these new students and exploring with Mather High School other ways we can help.

“For the Lord your God...loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing.  You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” - Deuteronomy 10:18-19
